MAKING

AN

FOREST

About the Team

Tokyo Urban Farming is an open platform to create and spread a sustainable urban lifestyle through agriculture.

Idea Overview

We create community farms using unused lands, rooftops, and private gardens in cities, as well as organizing events such as Farm to Table and Shokuiku (a Japanese term for "food education"), and doing experiments on creating compost stations. We also share ideas to raise awareness on urban farming.

Background & Motivation

Unused spaces and rooftops in cities aren't merely vacant spaces. They are part of the commons, where we can connect with each other and also with nature. Instead of making merely green, let's make farms, plant vegetables and fruits. In the stations, offices, private gardens, and veranda, let's make countless tiny farms to make Tokyo an edible forest.

Even in the cities, local food production and consumption are possible. You touch the soil and grow food, and share the products with others. Food waste could turn into great compost. This means you can become a producer from a mere consumer to regenerate our cities as well as the planet.
