THE
URBAN
CONDITION
The Urban Condition is a newly-established publication on Medium, telling stories about how humans interact with the cities they live in. We see mainly through the lens of urbanism, placemaking, architecture, and other city-related fields; but also put emphasis on human-centric disciplines such as philosophy, psychology, and the creative arts.
Did you know that the global urban population has surpassed its rural counterpart since 2007? For the first time in human history, more people now live in cities instead of villages and remote settlements. For what it’s worth, cities are now the most human place on earth.
We seek to explore the implications of this occurrence and learn how cities play their part in the grand game of humanity—how we shape them, and how they shape us in return.
We have several stories already published, and now we are looking for new writers to bring their unique perspectives about humans and cities from all around the world.
Could you be the one we're looking for?
Have a story to tell about your city? Come write with us!
We'd love to publish your story—visit our page to see how.
The name "The Urban Condition" is a wordplay of the more widely known term "the human condition." This broad and contemplative term describes the characteristics and key events that make humans, human; such as life and death, dreams and aspirations, growth, emotions, empathy, and meaning. It's also the title of Hannah Arendt's 1958 book, arguably her most influential work.
To define in one sentence, The Urban Condition is "the human condition on an urban scale."
