About the Team

Led by Chris Berthelsen, in collaboration with Shota Matsumura, Nina Yanagisawa, Jack Tilson, Jason Highet, Tracey Sunderland, and friends.

Idea Overview

Weeds Cafe is a free, delicious and open-to-all self-learning project for finding out and enjoying the "stuff you can eat that you didn't know you could" in the parks and roadsides of our neighbourhoods. We also support the propagation of edible and medicinal weeds throughout the city.

The Weeds Cafe operates roadside feasts, weeds catering, banquets using waste food parts, foraged medicine shops, ‘drinking parties’ of homebrew beer flavoured with weeds., and stuffing terrible junk food full of flowers and leaves - all experimentally and beautifully presented and tasted consumed off edible plates (i.e. leaves) and ceramics handmade of the clay that we find all over the city.

Realising that you can make dishes, bowls, plates, vessels and so on with the clay that lies underneath your houses and gardens, along cliffs and landslides, and dumped at the side of construction sites makes playing with the delicious plants that grow freely in our neighbourhoods even more exciting and drool-inducing!

Next Steps

Roadside hotel and feast station.
Vegan icecream stall flavoured with local weeds.
Replace the lunch shop of the local school with a free handmade food stall using foraged and donated food.
A weeds curry cart that roams the city, gradually increasing the curry as we find more weeds and donated snacks.
A wider range of weeds-flavoured homebrew beer.
Organise for more public parks to be spray-free.
Collaborate with anyone!
