Idea Overview

Urbanism in Action: Bringing Street Furniture to Public Spaces

Street furniture made by creators involved in the city, and bring it to the city.
We believe that by bringing street furniture made by creators involved in the city, we can create an exciting space that blends into our daily lives.
STREET FURNITURE EXHIBITION (SFE) was started with this idea.

An extraordinary space suddenly appeared in the city of a regional city. Streets along the river and the rooftops of multi-storey parking lots, which have potential but are not popular, were put in the spotlight, and 20 groups of 23 works by creators from inside and outside the city were scattered around the city, creating a new landscape. All the works were brought in and installed directly by the creators on the morning of the event. The upcycling of unused items and the use of materials that we often see in our daily lives gave color to the city.
Since the event was held outdoors despite the fact that it was the Corona Peril Festival, the number of people strolling along the street increased, and the restaurants along the street recorded record sales.

Background & Motivation

Background 1 There are many hidden creators in the city

As an employee of Maebashi City, I have been promoting city planning through public-private partnerships and utilizing idle real estate. In the process, I have met many young architects, designers, university students, and other creators who are taking action in the city, and I have come to understand the community of young people involved in the city. Many of them are interested in the city and are taking action with their own hands.I wanted to hold a trade fair of such creators with a low threshold so that citizens and children could enjoy it.

Background 2 The movement to use the city

Many social experiments based on "walkable city planning," which aims to create a bustling city by making people want to walk around, have been carried out in various parts of Japan. Many of these experiments have been held by coordinating chairs, tables, food stalls, etc. in public spaces on a trial basis, and Maebashi City is carrying out a similar initiative. But in reality, I felt uncomfortable in a space lined with ready-made and mass-produced chairs and tables.

Next Steps

We would like to develop this project once or twice a year in various public spaces.
