TOUCH

GRASS

!

"Touch Grass!" is a new meme popular among gamers. It is used to (ironically) encourage young people, who spend too much time online, to get out more and get in touch with nature. We live in a world where they can work and get what we want without leaving home. With all the talk of metaverses and online spaces, how can we maintain and regain our physical connection to urban space?

Ends a year ago (Dec 31, 2022)

We often learn about our physical environments through haptic experiences, and build understanding and connection with each material and element through it. It is like how we feel a firm surface of a street through our feet, how we feel cold resistance of metal by grabbing a handrail in a public transit. How we enjoy touching cool stone walls in a shade during the hot summer. How wooden homes feel warm and soft in our hands and feet. Touching the soil and nature often gives us a healing effect and mental stability.

The connection to a place and the sense of being are experienced through touching, grabbing, stroking, feeling, and observing by our body. However, in the time of digital technology, this sense of place can be easily forgotten. This campaign is to collect ideas that bring haptic experience to the forefront of urban design, rebuilding connection between humans and the built environments in cities.
