SMELL

SCAPE

Olfactory senses are one of the most powerful, emotional, and personal elements of urban experience. It affects our perception - it could make us feel happy and relaxed, or bothered, even sick. It could also be closely linked with specific memories, and make us travel across time in our minds. In urban spaces, odors are typical symptoms of pollution or sanitary condition in the area that has long-term impacts on our health and quality of life.

We all want to live in a place that smells good, but we don't usually talk much about how our cities smell and how we want it to smell. How can we include olfactory senses as a tool to make happier, healthier cities?

Imagine a feeling on your way home, when you smell your neighbors' cooking. A smell of the earth after raining. A smell of smoke that comes from your favorite BBQ restaurant. Imagine how you unconsciously avoid a street because it always has a strong smell of urine and garbage. The city is full of scents, and its smellscape is quite diverse. It thus conveys a lot of information about its urban environment.

It could also be actively used as a tool to make a positive impact. Imagine designing a scent that could make people relaxed and peaceful even amid the rush hour of the busy Tokyo station. What does it smell like? This campaign is to collect ideas and practices that use a sense of smell as a tool to unpack and intervene in our urban experience.
