OF

SHADOW

In 1933, Japanese author Jun'ichirō Tanizaki published a book "In Praise of Shadows (陰翳礼讃)" explaining traditional Japanese esthetics and the power of shadows on spaces and materials. He considered the layered tones of various kinds of shadows and their impact on interiors, including low-sheen materials like gold embroidery, patina, and cloudy crystals. While Tanizaki's theory on shadows still has considerable impacts on architects and designers of today, how can we include shadows as an important factor on designing contemporary cities?
